Your character's name (last, first):Weller, Conrad
Series your character's from: Kyou Kara Maou!
Background info on your character:
GET READY FOR LOTS OF READING, CAUSE THIS BOY HAS A LENGTHY HISTORY!!
Conrad is the second son of Cecilie von Spitzburg (aka Cheri), his father was Dan Hiri Weller. His daddy was considered the best swordsman in the kingdom, but he was also a human while his mother was a Mazoku (otherwise known as a “demon”) let alone the Maou (the ruler) of Shin Makoku, so he has mixed blood. As a result of this, he was not born with the ability to use Majyutsu (demon magic). However, just like his demon family, he has longevity on his side (he’s probably over 100 years old, since his little brother Wolfram is confirmed to be 82). Conrad has two brothers: Gwendal von Walde who is his elder brother, and Wolfram von Bielefeld who is his younger brother.
Conrad is assumed to have a pretty active and normal childhood. He spent much of his time with his father. Conrad loved his father very much, as they traveled together often. However, when his father died, he was left in the care of his mother. This was when he spent much of his time with little Wolfram, who clung onto him for dear life. The two seemed to be happy until the day that Conrad told Wolfram that he was part human. Since then, Wolfram has built a wall between him and Conrad, mostly for having such a big secret being kept from him for so long. It is safe to assume that Conrad got along with Gwendal, as we don’t see any kind of tensions between them at all, both in the past and present. Conrad eventually learned the art of sword fighting from Gunter von Christ, a loyal servant to the Maou, and he was prided as being his best pupil.
When he became 16 (at least by appearances, what that is in Mazoku years is beyond my comprehension at the moment), he chose to live as a Mazoku instead of living as a human. His allegiance was further pushed 20 years prior to the start of the series when he entered in the war against the humans. It was during this time that we see his relationship with a young woman named Suzanna Julia von Wincott. Julia was blind and great at healing magic, but she held strong views that one day humans and Mazoku will live in peace and harmony. Conrad was good friends with her, and before he went off to battle she gave him a blue necklace. He then goes off and fights the good fight, coming out alive. However, fate can be cruel, and Julia dies. But all hope wasn’t lost; Julia’s soul was preserved and Conrad was given the duty to take her soul to Earth to ensure its safety, as the soul chosen to be the next coming Maou.
Conrad reluctantly accepts the mission and takes Julia’s soul to Earth as promised. It is here that he meets Rodriguez, an associate to the Maou of Earth, who was also entrusted to ensure the safety of a soul (who we later find out happens to be the soul of the Great Sage, but we’ll get to that in a bit). Conrad eventually meets the suitable family, the Shibuyas, and entrusts them with the soul. Shibuya Miko becomes pregnant with her second child, and when she was in labor she tried to get to the hospital on her own via taxi. Conrad finds her and takes her to the hospital. It is here that Conrad gives Miko the name “Yuuri,” which he says is the word for the month of July from where he’s from. Thus, Shibuya Yuuri, our main protagonist, was born. But Conrad didn’t stay for the birth. Immediately after getting Miko to the hospital, he returns to Shin Makoku.
Now, fast forward to episode 1. Yuuri is now 15 years old and for the first time, he is pulled to Shin Makoku via toilet. The poor boy was lost and confused, especially when everyone was avoiding him. He is soon approached by Adalbert, a Mazoku who defected to the human side, but enter our hero Conrad! Conrad manages to get Yuuri away from Adalbert and takes him to the castle, along the way explaining that he is destined to become the next Maou of Shin Makoku. With all the weird crap that Yuuri goes through, Conrad is the one person that Yuuri could openly trust. In fact, Yuuri calls Conrad “Nazukeoya” which translates to “the one who named me.” Basically Conrad is Yuuri’s godfather. Not only that, but Conrad also has a passion for baseball. He and Yuuri are often seen tossing a baseball around and having a grand ol’ time. Also, it is during the first few episodes that we learn that his real name is actually Conrart, but because of Yuuri’s Japanese accent, he pronounces the name as “Conrad.” Everyone pretty much sticks with that name for him after that.
Conrad, like the rest of his family, is devoted to protecting Yuuri with his life. He goes as far as losing an arm while fighting, just to make sure that Yuuri got back home to Earth OK. This freaked out poor Yuuri, seeing his beloved godfather actually losing an arm (we see the scene of the arm hacking maybe like 5-10 times in only a few episodes). Eventually, Yuuri comes back only to find that Conrad has mysteriously vanished. No one in the castle had seen or heard from him since the incident, and this makes Yuuri more worried. To make matters worse, Big Shimaron (a human country) is plotting to gather the Four Forbidden Boxes to obtain ultimate power and destroy the Mazoku. So Yuuri and Co. go on another adventure, this time to get the Boxes before Big Shimaron does.
Speaking of the Forbidden Boxes, here’s the basic rundown with them. Four thousand years ago, Shinou (the very first Maou, often referred to as the Original King), the Great Sage (told you I’d get to him!), and Shinou’s forces fought Soushu, an evil being bent on destroying the world. The only way Shinou could have defeated Soushu was by dividing his power and sealing them away in four separate boxes. To doubly make sure that Soushu would not come back, he entrusted the keys to the boxes to the four families that were allied to him. And wouldn’t you know it, Weller is one of those families! The keys are specific body parts, and the keys are randomly reborn into someone from the said family. It is here that Big Shimaron reveals that they have one of the keys to the boxes—Conrad’s missing arm. They proceed to use the arm to unlock the power—but they made the mistake of opening the wrong box with the wrong key. Tons of power was released, but Yuuri was able to contain the power and place it back in the box.
So where was Conrad during all this? We later see that Conrad is alive and kicking. Hell, he even got his arm back! However, he was wearing the uniform of Big Shimaron. Everyone was devastated to hear that Conrad had betrayed, and that he even raised a sword against Yuuri. Yuuri didn’t want to believe that Conrad had actually deceived him, while everyone else (as shocked as they were) was beginning to view him as an enemy. Of course, this doesn’t last long. We see that Conrad was planning to gather all the boxes for Big Shimaron, only to steal them later and return to Shin Makoku. His plan was thwarted and he returned to Shin Makoku, but as expected he was not accepted back very lightly. He was arrested for his actions, and his feelings of emo finally caught up to him (*gasp* EMO Conrad for a few episodes! O_O). Feeling that he was now unworthy to serve his king, Conrad had broken out of prison and planned on leaving without a word. However, Yuuri and the others caught up to him in time and Conrad eventually makes amends with his family and with Yuuri.
Conrad eventually goes back to being the good guy that he is, serving and protecting Yuuri. But now let’s fast forward to the downer episodes…aka the last 10 episodes. The boxes have been successfully gathered, but the seals have weakened. Yuuri was determined to reinforce the seal, but the ceremony was interrupted with a possessed Wolfram attacking. Conrad notices immediately that something was wrong with his little brother, and the power of the boxes was soon too much for Yuuri to handle. The key that rested in Conrad’s left arm was taken, rendering that arm completely useless. That and among other things left everyone pretty much incapacitated, yet still Conrad went out to fight even in his condition. Long story short, Yuuri saves the day.
PHEW! NOW THAT THAT’S DONE, LET’S ACTUALLY GET ONTO SOME PERSONALITY/RELATIONSHIP STUFF!
The first thing you can recognize about Conrad is that his loyalty to Shin Makoku and the Maou knows no bounds. This is especially seen with his “betrayal.” He had the best intentions to help Yuuri and the others, and the plan probably would have worked too if he wasn’t found out. Everyone was shocked when they found out that he “betrayed” because they knew just how loyal he is to Yuuri. With nearly every adventure that Yuuri embarks on, Conrad is always there by his side to protect him. Conrad will always abide by Yuuri’s decisions, even if they appear to be reckless. When every else asks what they should do, Conrad is always the first to say, “I will obey His Majesty’s wishes.”
The first person we see Conrad really interact with is Yuuri. Because Conrad is the kind of guy that’s easy to approach, Yuuri often came to him when he was taking his first steps into becoming the Maou. Yuuri also identifies with Conrad easily because of the fact that Conrad has been to Earth (and he’s been to Boston and has seen the Red Socks play). Yuuri and Conrad like to toss a baseball around a lot, talking as they go. Conrad and Yuuri have deep conversations, such as when Conrad asked Yuuri why he quit baseball. Even though Conrad is his godfather, Yuuri looks up to him more like a big brother. In the very beginning of the series, Conrad gives Yuuri the necklace that Julia had given to him, saying that it will protect him. Boy does that necklace come in handy. Conrad is also one of the few people to call Yuuri by his name moreso than “His Majesty.”
Conrad’s relationship with his little brother is quite complex. As mentioned before, when Wolfram was a child, he looked up to Conrad. In fact, Conrad was the one who taught him how to sword fight. Heck, he raised Wolfram since Cheri was busy doing Maou duties. Hence, why Wolfram was so close to him. Wolfram, though, was eventually raised on the ideal that humans are trash, and when he learned that Conrad was half-human, he was devastated. Since then, Wolfram has shunned him, insulted him, even refuses to admit that Conrad is his flesh-and-blood brother. However, despite all the crap that Wolfram gives him, Conrad still sees him as his precious little brother. Conrad is well aware that Mazoku and humans don’t see eye to eye (at least in the beginning), so Wolfram being so cold towards him doesn’t quite surprise him. In fact, Conrad doesn’t even attempt to reprimand Wolfram for his actions; he simply lets Wolfram say and do what he wants towards him. He probably does this because Wolfram is old enough that it doesn’t matter what Conrad does, Wolfram is stubborn enough to not listen to a word he says. Wolfram, though, isn’t as heartless as he puts off. Regardless of how he treats him, deep down Wolfram sees Conrad as his big brother, but because of his pride he is not willing to admit that. Perhaps Conrad is aware of this? He’s probably the one person that can read Wolfram like a book.
Conrad appears to have a good relationship with his big brother, Gwendal. As both have been involved in the war against the humans, they have had their fair share of hardships and obstacles that they can easily relate to. Conrad and Gwendal treat each other with the upmost respect. When Conrad “betrayed” and returned to Shin Makoku, it was Gwendal that gave the order to have him arrested. While Yuuri protested this, Conrad accepted the decision. They also relate to the fact that they both carry keys to the Forbidden Boxes. Together, they plan on what to do with the boxes, knowing full well of how risky it was for them specifically to get involved.
Cheri loves all her sons, and Conrad is no exception. She likes to go on and on about how much he is like his father and likes to hug him a lot. Conrad doesn’t object to the crazy lifestyle that Cheri lives, as he knows that it’s his mother’s decision. When it is revealed that he carries one of the keys, Cheri is saddened by the harsh fate that her son has been given, but Conrad reassured her that he has accepted this fate.
Gunter, as flamboyant and psycho as he is, sees Conrad as his best pupil. This is especially seen when Conrad and Gunter fight during the whole “betrayal” crap. Gunter is clearly heartbroken to see Conrad on the enemy’s side, but goes after him regardless. Gunter is a force to be reckoned with, and Conrad was not afraid to fight him, clearly showing just how brave he is. Afterwards, when Conrad is a good guy again, all is back to normal between the master and pupil.
One of the closest people to Conrad is Jozak, another half-human half-Mazoku. Conrad and his dad were traveling when they saw the child Jozak all alone. They take him back to Shin Makoku, and the two have been inseparable since. Conrad and Jozak fought in the war side by side, and they often go on missions together. As such, Conrad can easily open up to him. Even if Conrad tries to hide how he feels, Jozak can tell. At the end, when the last enemy they had to fight was Shinou himself, Conrad ponders why Shinou would do all this, planning everything in the series just so that he can destroy the world (and he looks like he’s going to break down from it too). Jozak comes by and cheers up his friend, but not before cutting apart the portraits of Shinou and the Great Sage.
Conrad is an expert swordsman, one that even Wolfram regards as the best. This is very likely due to having Dan Hiri for a father and then being taught by Gunter. He has to be an expert with a sword since he does not have magical powers to back him up in a fight like Wolfram, Gunter, and Gwendal. He has to rely on his sword alone to ensure that he survives. He handled his own against Gunter very well, and as expected from his military experience, has fought countless battles. Even when he lost his left arm and later lost its function (and fortunately he is a right handed fighter), he managed to fight his way through and live.
He can be serious when the situation calls for it, but the majority of the time, he is kind hearted, especially towards Yuuri. Again, back to the betraying bit, when Yuuri first sees Conrad after so long, Conrad actually goes out of his to talk to Yuuri, asking if he is OK, and saying that he does not want to fight Yuuri, but for him to merely surrender. You could say that he started picking up Yuuri’s ideals about not hurting anyone immediately, although there are times when he has no choice but to shed blood if it means that Yuuri will be safe. He cares deeply for his king, his family, and his kingdom, and will do anything to help them. Thus the whole betraying thing that I just can’t seem to stop talking about. So naturally Conrad does not take too kindly to Adalbert, a known traitor to Shin Makoku.
Conrad has been to Earth several times, so he knows of specific locations, such as the United States, Japan, and Switzerland, as well as having a basic knowledge of Earth customs. Thus he is able to understand what Yuuri is drawing comparisons from in the beginning of the series. It is also well known that Conrad tells bad puns…a lot. He gets his muds wordled, and while he finds it amusing, no one else does. Well we can’t all be perfect.
What they were doing when they got pulled to the island?: I’m taking Conrad from the end of the series. It has been days (in Shin Makoku time) since Wolfram and Yuuri have disappeared (aka landed on Island), and Conrad goes out to search for them. Sure enough, his search leads him to the Island.
